Many of you, who have researched your own family history you will know, that at some point, an ancestor sticks out his/her leg to trip you up and this, of course sends you flying in another direction. In my case when I first began my research I thought I could trace my lineage back to the middle ages and on one line I have, however on another line things didn't run so smoothly which prevented me ever tracing my tree back further than the 19th century. I discovered, when I obtained the birth certificate of my 2x great grandfather, that the man who was considered to be my 3x great grandfather actually wasn't. The family didn't know this and they were brought up using his surname.
I have much admiration for this man who goes by the name of Joseph Taylor he was more of a 'father' to my ancestors than the man whose DNA runs through my veins.
This kind of thing doesn't just occur just once in my family tree I have another case that dates back to the mid 1500's. So, we really do have to ask ourselves - 'who do we think we are?'
