Richard I Marries

12/5/2018

On this day in 1191 King Richard I married Berengaria of Navarre, the marriage took place in Limassol in Cyprus.
Picture
There is little evidence about Berengaria and Richard's relationship and what there are are focused on just a few facts such as despite accompanying Richard on Crusade they never travelled together, Richard was more interested in the Crusades than he was in her, their marriage was never consummated.

It is also written that she was the only English queen never to have set foot in England.

I wonder how many of the above facts are true?

After Richard's death, Berengaria settled in Le Mans living a religious life in L’Epau Abbey where she died in 1230 and where she was buried.

Richard I Fatally Injured in France

King Richard I was fatally injured in the March of 1199 wounded while fighting in France.
Picture
Richard had arrived at Chalus Chabrol Castle, it was while he was walking the castle's perimeter that he was struck by a crossbow bolt in the left shoulder just below his neck. The bolt was fired by an archer named Pierre Basile.

An attempt was made to remove the bolt but

"extracted the wood only, while the iron remained in the flesh... but after this butcher                                                                        had carelessly mangled the King's arm in every part, he at last extracted the arrow."

He would die seventeen days later in the arms of his mother.

"What is history but a fable agreed upon?"

"What is history but a fable agreed upon?" - Napoleon Bonaparte
Picture

In these two images of Richard I and Richard III it is very clear what message the illustrator wishes to portray. Richard I is seen as noble, fierce and of matchless courage and Richard III as a hunchbacked, devious, a bloodthirsty tyrant and doesn't this come across very well?

Both these images are biased and they both irritate me, the message they give is unfair and unbalanced and proves how we must to be careful to watch out for bias, we should question, but show respect for, the opinion of others. Artists images and the written word of historians tell different stories about what happened in history, they are influenced by their biases, their loyalties and personal experiences. We are all, of course, entitled to our opinions but the question is, is bias a good thing?

It isn't if you only take what you see at face value or if the same ideas and opinions are perpetuated and we never learn.

It can be a good thing as it is very useful, it lets us find out about what people believed or thought about a particular subject.

People like me who want to learn should find evidence from different sources so that we can form a balanced opinion ourselves so we can detect bias and prejudice when we see it.

On this day in 1192, King Richard I was captured in the Austrian town of Vienna whilst on his way home from crusade by King Leopold V of Austria.
Picture
Following his departure from the Holy land in October, Richard was travelling in a disguise when he was captured and imprisoned. The English king was held hostage until February 1194, a ransom was eventually paid to release him, part of which was used to build the Austrian town Wiener Neusdadt.

Richard's wound soon became gangrenous and he died on at the beginning of the following month.

History is so interesting isn't it? Do you love the story of King Alfred's unsuccessful afternoon in the kitchen or King Cnut unsuccessful attempt not to get his feet wet? Maybe you're interested in when the Normans landing on our shores or the stories of an era closer to our time?

Personally I love anything medieval especially the period that covers the Wars of the Roses and my favorite king Richard III
