'attempt to establish a temporary, legally-binding form of self-government until such time as the Company could get formal permission from the Council of New England.'
The Mayflower Compact was signed by forty one English colonists, it was the first written framework of government in the country that we now know as the United States of America. All adult males had to sign the document and it was drawn up to prevent trouble that was brewing among Puritans and Pilgrims, it bound them together for the purpose of forming a government and by doing so they were forced to abide by any laws and regulations that would later be established
“for the general good of the colony.”
The original document has been lost, however the oldest known source is a copy that can be found an account of Plymouth’s settlement written by William Bradford and Edward Winslow. It begins:
"In ye name of God Amen. We whose names are underwritten, the loyall subjects of our dread soveraigne Lord King James,
by ye grace of God, of Great Britaine, France, & Ireland King, defender of ye faith, etc......"
